PNN maintains a longstanding partnership with the AOb and has a so-called quality seat in the sector of Scientific Education and Research at the AOb. With this seat, PNN can address the interests of PhD candidates at the AOb. 80% of the members in the sector Scientific Education and Research at the AOb belong to academic staff, including PhD candidates, which means that there is a lot of substantive expertise within the AOb.
De AOb en PNN treden al jaren samen op bij verschillende acties. Zoals de jaarlijkse acties rond de opening van het academisch jaar, de gezamenlijke actie in 2015 tegen de invoering van het experimenteerartikel voor beurspromovendi of de acties voor meer investeringen in universiteiten. De laatste geslaagde actie van de AOb, andere bonden en het PNN aan het CvB van de RUG om beurspromovendi de jaarlijks toegezegde indexering van hun beurs ook te geven.
PNN heeft goede ervaringen met de hulp die een vakbond zoals de AOb kan bieden in individuele gevallen. De AOb biedt haar leden gratis rechtshulp. Daar is wel een voorwaarde aan verbonden: rechtshulp kan alleen worden geboden bij conflicten die tijdens de aanvang van het lidmaatschap nog niet bestonden. Word dus lid voordat je een probleem met je werkgever krijgt.
Alle promovendi, werkzaam bij een universiteit of een onderzoeksinstituut van NWO, kunnen lid worden van de AOb, maar reglementair hebben alleen werknemerpromovendi recht op gratis rechtsbijstand en stemrecht bij nieuwe cao’s. Wel heeft de praktijk laten zien dat de AOb ook voor beurspromovendi van groot belang kan zijn bij een gezamenlijke actie.
